ADVENT

Advent, from the Latin adventus, means "coming" or "arrival."

When the Church established the Christian calendar to shape the rhythm of the year, it recognized the weeks leading up to Christmas as a perfect time to reflect on Jesus’ coming.

For most of us today, "Jesus’ coming" immediately brings to mind his incarnation and birth. Advent calendars and Christmas traditions often emphasize this joyful event.

However, in the early Church, another coming held even greater significance: Jesus’ second coming. Why? Because they believed it was closer, more imminent, and a source of hope and urgency.

This Advent at Risen Church, we’ll focus on both comings of Jesus—his return in glory and his humble arrival in Bethlehem.
